Rail commuters will be able to use the Opal card to travel on the Illawarra and East Hills rail lines from Friday, March 28.
Premier Barry O’Farrell and Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said the Opal electronic ticketing system would be rolled out to the entire Sydney Trains network by that date.
On March 28, Opal can be used at an additional 70 stations including Green Square to Macarthur and Sydenham to Waterfall and Cronulla.
It will be extended on April 4 to another 52 stations on the South Coast line to Wollongong, Port Kembla and Bomaderry, and the Southern Highlands line to Goulburn.
A NSW Transport spokesman said on Wednesday that passengers who used the Opal Card machines while the system was in test mode could be fined for fare evasion.
