The Dragons scored three tries to two, but were far from impressive against a team missing so many stars.
However the win keep them on top of the competition table, and unbeaten after three rounds.
The game was not of a high calibre, with thunderstorms early making conditions slippery. The Dragons lead 14-6 at halftime and held on scoreless in the second half.
A highlight of the night was a Brett Morris second try - an acrobatic effort over the sideline to somehow get the ball down.
"It will take some beating for try of the year," said Dragons coach Steve Price.
But the game will be better remembered for the number of no-try rulings.
Sharks coach Peter Sharp was pleased his under-strength team backed up so well after playing only five days earlier on Monday night.
Of course the return of Todd Carney had a bit to do with that.
The win gives the Dragons three straight wins for their new season.
Dragons 14: Brett Morris 2, Jason Nightingale tries; Gareth Widdop goal d Sharks 12: John Morris 2 tries; Michael Gordon 2 goals.
