THERE could be more outdoor fitness equipment for seniors in Hurstville following the council's recent resolution to investigate the installation of such equipment in Woodville Park.
Nancy Liu, the councillor behind the idea, said that such equipment already installed at Oatley Park and Timothy Reserve was popular with the seniors who lived nearby.
"Outdoor fitness equipment for seniors is a proven concept in parts of southern Europe and South-east Asia, particularly China where seniors are seen to enjoy each other's company while using the equipment to maintain flexibility, strength and motion," Cr Liu said.
"More than 32 per cent of residents in Hurstville are over 50 years of age and looking for new ways to exercise and stay fit.
"Exercise facilities can be found in most suburbs; however, not many exercise facilities are made available to seniors."
Cr Liu said she had been approached by the community about the possibility of fitness equipment designed specifically for seniors at Woodville Park, Hurstville.
"There are schools, childcare centres and many unit blocks close to the park, which is used by the residents and students each morning, after school, at dinner time and other times," she said.
Cr Liu is backed by a group of students and their teacher, Gordon Chen, who compiled a study on the need for outdoor gym facilities for seniors to socialise, exercise and actively enjoy time with family and grandchildren.
