SEVEN people with disabilities ranging from being visually impaired to paraplegia have had their first scuba diving lesson — and loved it.
All want to try scuba diving again, one participant being delighted that he found a starfish underwater.
Lugarno Lions Club organised the venture, providing shelter on shore and a barbecue lunch.
Qualified instructors from Abyss Scuba donated their time as instructors and diving buddies and the company the cost of diving equipment for those with disabilities.
Participants tried their skills at pool sessions at Caringbah and Sans Souci before trying "the real thing" at Ramsgate Beach, Botany Bay. There was a treasure hunt on land.
Lugarno Lions club president Elvio Munzone said it was the first time in 21 years he had been associated with a scuba diving project for the disabled.
