NORTH Cronulla finished the top Bate Bay club and the only one inside the top 10 (ninth overall) in the just completed Australian Surf Lifesaving titles at Scarborough beach, Perth.
Standouts included their R&R team which won gold in the U19 and open female five-person, including Hannah Goman, Kelly Primmer, Chelsea Robertson, Maddison McKinnery and Jade Jenkins, and coached by Karen Goman.
History was made in the open mixed six-person R&R where Stephanie Buncombe, Taylor Harvey, Patricia Cowan, Alexandra Stokes-Hughes, Monica Di Maio, and Lucy Mahoney became the first ever all-female team to make the podium, winning bronze.
The surfboard riding team collected five medals in total. Oliver Hoare stormed to a third successive national title for 2014 in the U17 2km beach run and won gold in his surf team event, with James Southwell, Lachlan Moyle and Jack Harrison. Jazmyn Turner backed up her gold at state by winning her national surfboard riding event.
The club's under 17 teams excelled, winning the male surf team and the female board relay team (Alexandra Budd, Maggie Mahoney and Megan Fowler). Club president Craig McKinniery walked the walk by winning a bronze medal in the malibu board race.
Glayds Honer, an inspirational senior athlete, won two gold medals in the masters and one silver for beach events, with the 140 years male surfboat team storming to victory.
Wanda was best served by their U19s and R&R teams (gold and silver), with Ali Najem winning gold and silver in the 2km runs; Jay Furniss gold and bronze in the surf and Danielle McMahon and Taylar Puskaric heading the women's surf medals.
Cronulla's gold medalist Kyla King and Ngaire Hadfield headed a strong women's beach team where the Bate Bay clubs U15 women excelled, particularly in the flags where half the eight finalists came from Cronulla and Elouera.
Cronulla's Ngaire Hadfield finished with the silver behind winner Sophie McGovern from South Curl Curl and Elouera's Tara Stortenbeker, the bronze with the younger Talia Munro (Cronulla) seventh and Monique Wood (Elouera) eighth.
Ironman Dane Farrell headed Elouera's tally of five bronze medals won. The strong Helensburgh-Stanwell Park beach team did well, including gold medallist Avalon Punch, while the small Burning Palms club had one big win: their veteran team including two 70-year-olds won the open march past event.
