It started as an idea to help the cancer patients of exercise physiologist Brent Collier of Kirrawee but four years later the event he organised has raised $150,000.
The money goes to the Cancer Council NSW for research, awareness and education initiatives.
The event involves people riding their mountain bikes for six hours through the Royal National Park, starting and ending at Heathcote East Public School with the aim to ‘‘short-circuit cancer’’.
The latest ride included family and friends of the foundation members.
The 2014 event in which more than 200 took part raised the largest single amount of $42,000.
Rider Erica Galea said the school had been ‘‘amazing supporters’’.
‘‘They gave us access to the sports oval and the P & C opened up the canteen for us and made us sandwiches,’’ Ms Galea said.
Some of the riders, including the event founder, celebrated survival with others riding to support a family or friend with cancer and some who rode in the memory of a loved one lost to the disease.
Mr Collier said the idea of running the event began to take form when he was going through his own health problems.
‘‘It gave me an outlet and let me focus on creating something positive out of a negative,’’ Mr Collier said.
The event is sponsored by Toyota.
