Not speaking for me
I agree with the St George and Sutherland Shire Refugee Support Group and GetUp "Scott Morrison misrepresented the Sutherland Shire" ("Refugee backlash," Leader, April 10).
I go further: he misrepresents the Australian people. This is a person who is not just the member for Cook but is now in charge of Immigration. He purports to speak on behalf of decent Australians who are disgusted by his petty, mean-spirited approach to refugees.
Mr Morrison fails to appreciate that not everyone is lucky enough to have been born in to the favourable circumstances most of us in Australia take for granted. I wonder if Mr Morrison wouldn't jump on a boat if he and his family were under threat ?
Many Australians are smart enough to see through the self-serving populism of Mr Morrison. He should never be allowed to speak for all of us including the Sutherland Shire where there are many decent people who oppose his brand of conservative narrow minded politics.
The previous member for Cook, Bruce Baird, showed how you could retain your Liberal ideals and gain the support of the electorate.
Unfortunately, Mr Morrison believes he needs to lead the dog whistle against refugees in the hope this will elevate him to the Prime Minister. Can you imagine anything worse than Abbott? - Yes!

Misrepresenting truth
Hardly a surprise that Scott Morrison should so blatantly misrepresent the truth about alleged support for his refugee policy.
He has very slim regard for the truth at the best of times. The concentration camps are filling quickly and the sooner we can get rid of this dreadful apology for a government the better.
I have voted Labor all my life — they are gone as well now, with the Greens being the only party I can see to demonstrate any compassion in the Aussie spirit.
