ROCKDALE Council has taken the first step in building a youth centre described as "second to none" and designed to attract St George young people well into the future.
The centre will be constructed in Arncliffe, at 4 Wardell Street and the adjoining 213 Princes Highway in conjunction with the housing development above shops proposed for the same Princes Highway site.
Rockdale mayor Shane O'Brien said the Arncliffe Youth Centre was the first of three major projects to come on line, signalling the beginning of the most significant investment in capital works Rockdale has ever seen. The others were the new library and Bexley Pool.
"This is an exciting outcome for residents," Cr O'Brien said.
"The council is on course to deliver the major initiatives we promised the people of Rockdale.
"I'm committed to continuing working with my fellow councillors to see these projects through to completion."
He said the centre would be a high quality facility accommodating a wide range of recreational activities and youth services.
It will provide opportunities for sporting activities, learning, study, homework space, musical and artistic pursuits as well as a safe haven to receive ongoing support and counselling.
Features will include two indoor multi-purpose courts, one with grandstand seating for up to 440 spectators with recreational activities such as indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, futsal and badminton.
Cr O'Brien said the centre was designed for the present and future needs of the growing population of young people in the Rockdale area.
"This provides a unique, innovative and financially prudent opportunity to develop the type of community facilities the community should expect," he said.
