BUNDEENA'S Bill "the bike man" was a bit of a scallywag but was always ready to help children build or fix their bikes, his widow said.
Joan Sinclair was married to the bike man for 65 years before he died in hospital in May last year.
He was the Bundeena Progress Association president at the time of his death.
Now Mr Sinclair's encouragement of the young of the area to be more self-sufficient has resulted in the youngsters' suggestion to name the local skate bowl after him — an idea taken up by Sutherland Shire Council.
So the skate bowl was dedicated as the Bill Sinclair Skate Bowl on Saturday.
The skate bowl itself came about after Mr Sinclair encouraged Bundeena people to support the project, with the council matching funds raised to have it built.
"Bill went and sat and sold raffle tickets after he got a prize organised," Mrs Sinclair said. "He did that for two or three years."
Her late husband's interest in bikes began after a grandson ran to him saying "can you fix this bike?"
The child asked the right man — Mr Sinclair was a highly skilled fitter and turner and mechanical fitter in the army. Mrs Sinclair said Bill also used to make billycarts and windmills.
The Sinclairs moved to Bundeena in 1984.
Sutherland Shire mayor Steve Simpson said Mr Sinclair was best known for his volunteer work, often building bikes from spare parts before giving them to local children.
