CRONULLA Sharks water polo club have won double bronze medals at the 14 years and under boys and girls national championships in Brisbane and Melbourne over last weekend.
Cronulla Blue boys won their evenly matched bronze medal final against the UNSW Wests Magpies 10-9 at Valley Pool, Brisbane.
Cronulla coach Andrew Kerr noted it would take discipline to walk away with the win — and Cronulla did just that.
The second quarter was where Cronulla found space with Daniel Kerr taking his second goal and Harry Dickens notched up a double for the quarter en route to four goals for the game.
University definitely turned up the heat on Cronulla in the final two minutes with three goals but the Sharks held on.
"Our boys showed character at the end of a tough week and our strengths certainly showed with our centre forward and centre back plays," said Kerr.
■At the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre Cronulla girls ran out 5-2 winners over University of NSW to also take bronze.
It was a defiant Cronulla who capitalised on their strong swimming in the second quarter to jump one goal ahead.
Cronulla edged ahead again in the third and when Abbey Freeman collected her second, it was all over for the game.
"Our defence was strongest, with good ball skills, passing in attack and good ball speed all supporting factors," said Cronulla coach Lisa Weekes.
