Cronulla Plaza will be a place for prayers and play on Easter Saturday.
A group of 50-60 Christians will hold a prayer vigil outside the electoral office of Cook MP and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison.
A few metres away, in the amphitheatre, the ‘‘animal farm’’ will be staged as part of the annual Cronulla Easter Show, which usually draws big crowds.
The prayer vigil, starting about noon, will seek to highlight what protesters claim is Australia’s “cruel treatment” of asylum seekers.
Spokesman Matt Anslow said the gathering would not interfere with other activities and had been approved by police.
‘‘Anyone is welcome as long as people know it is peaceful and our aim is not only to humanise asylum seekers but also not to demonise those who are responsible for the policies,’’ he said.
‘‘We want to show support for them to do the right thing.
‘‘If we want to see transformation on this issue, we need to see people transformed.’’
A prayer ‘‘sit-in’’ inside Mr Morrison’s office last month had its sequel in Sutherland Court last week where charges against five people who pleaded guilty to trespassing were dismissed without a conviction being recorded under section 10 (1a) of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act.
A large group of supporters prayed outside the court.
More in the Leader on Thursday.
Will you attend the prayer vigil, Easter show, or both?
