A NEW show that shines a light on the joys and tribulations of motherhood is set to premiere in Sydney in the lead-up to Mother’s Day.
Caringbah actor Lynda Leavers will perform a role in the play Mothers, which will showcase the original work of two dozen Australian writers, including Kathryn Yuen of Hurstville Grove.
The stories portrayed are said to span the entire maternal spectrum.
Producer Joy Roberts had expected a flurry of light-hearted or satirical stories when she put out the call for monologue submissions.
What she didn’t expect was a series of stories exposing the darker side of motherhood.
Mothers will explore the experiences of women from many walks of life — including a woman whose dream is to be a mother, a teen who hadn’t planned to be one, a new mum in her 40s, a soon-to-be grandmother and a struggling new immigrant mother, among others.
Leavers, a member of The Arts Theatre Cronulla, has been acting for 14 years and recently won the best actress award in the 2014 Short+Sweet finals.
She said she immediately related to her role in Mothers.
Kathryn Yuen wrote a monologue, and is herself an actress and mother of four.
She has recently completed filming a six-part TV series Maximum Choppage for Matchbox Pictures.
The monologue in the show was written to honour the brave women she has counselled as part of her Lifeline work.
Mothers is at the Roxbury Hotel, Glebe, on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons throughout early May, leading up to a special Mother’s Day finale on Sunday, May 11.
