THE childcare and early learning sector was the focus of discussions this month at Cafe 41, Penshurst.
Assistant Minister for Education Sussan Ley and Banks MP David Coleman met with childcare workers to talk about the federal government's policies for the future of the industry.
Mr Coleman said childcare fees in his electorate were at an average of almost $400 a week for parents who worked full-time.
He said access to affordable and flexible childcare was a priority.
"It's really concerning when we've got families who can't afford to go back to work because childcare is too expensive," he said.
"That's why the Coalition's decision to task the Productivity Commission to look at ways to make childcare more affordable, flexible and accessible is essential for families in our community."
Ms Ley said the commission inquiry received more than 1100 submissions in Australia.
Director of Kids & Co at the Grove in South Hurstville, Jenny Koutoulas, said the forum gave childcare providers the chance to voice their concerns.
"[The minister] addressed the major changes in assessments and ratings that are affecting our industry," she said.
