As a lifetime resident of Cronulla, it is difficult to fathom the reasoning and lack of thought behind some of the proposed changes in the Sutherland Shire local environment plan (LEP).
Unfortunately, they overwhelm the more practical aspects of it. I have no issue with the LEP adding a storey or two here and there to developments, in order to promote a renewal of the area.
However, from a very general perspective, what is proposed is an annihilation of the very fabric of the area that we love.
The beauty of Cronulla is that it is not Bondi, it is not over-developed and, outside of summer weekends, it is not over-populated.
Why do they want to kill off the very reason people love living in the area?
There are also more fundamental and specific issues which appear to have been given little thought.
From a personal perspective our townhouse faces Mitchell Road. Our street and its surrounds are essentially a family area, full of homes and children. Since the evening road closure at Prince Street, the terrible antisocial behaviour which occurred there has all but disappeared.
Are these people actually seriously considering reintroducing these problems by allowing bars in Prince Street?
Have they even given consideration as to the impact that introducing bars, restaurants and retail noise smack bang into the middle of this established residential area will have?
I find the proposal simply unbelievable. The council and law cannot even control the bars and associated poor behaviour in the mall.
