THE Sutherland Shire is at the forefront of Australia's efforts to beat cancer, and the Relay for Life Sutherland is a great example of our community's commitment to this cause.
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), based at Lucas Heights in the western corner of the shire, is proud to play a key role in manufacturing the nuclear medicines needed to accurately diagnose and treat a range of cancers for the benefit of all Australians.
Chief executive of ANSTO, Dr Adi Paterson, said Australia was now well positioned to take a global lead in delivering nuclear medicines for diagnosis, and to begin to locally produce cancer treatments.
"Current research projects from our scientists include taking a close look into targeting antibodies in tumours, finding metabolic markers in cancers for imaging and treatments, and developing new ways to accurately deliver appropriate doses of radiation to tumours while protecting the health of patients," Dr Paterson said.
"Nuclear medicines and nuclear research techniques continue to offer some of the most promising pathways, but efforts to address cancer take more than just great science — we need continued fund-raising for research and awareness programs to keep the problem in the spotlight.
"ANSTO is proud to be a major supporter of Relay For Life Sutherland and works alongside our community to fight cancer."
