My great-grandfather and grandfather were both veterans of World War I. They lived at Carlton.
Their names are on the honour roll in Carss Cottage at Carss Park, Blakehurst. The honour roll is a wooden plaque that survived the fire when Carlton railway station burnt down.
Albert James Claxton was wounded at Gallipolli, 18th Battalion AIF. Reginald Robert Claxton was wounded in France, 24th Battalion AIF.
Albert and Reginald returned to Australia and lived long lives.
Reginald's daughter, Win Hudson (my mother), turns 92 this year and is living in a nursing home in Sutherland.
She has three daughters (two living, one deceased), 10 adult grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
In 1913, when the family migrated from England, another son, Albert Thomas Claxton, remained at home.
He was a member of the Queens Royal West Surry Regiment.
Alas, in 1914, he was killed in France at the age of 23; their mother Moira learnt of his death when one of her letters was returned to her marked "deceased".
