Michael Tynan was described as ‘‘a giant of the NRMA’’ when he announced today he would be stepping down as the motoring body’s deputy president after nine years in that role.
Mr Tynan, a prominent motor vehicle dealer and former president of Sutherland Shire Council, joined the NRMA board in 2003.
He was elected deputy president in 2005 and will relinquish that role from July 1.
Mr Tynan will remain as a director to complete his 12-year term which ends in January 2015. He represents the region of Hoddle which covers St George, Sutherland Shire and the Illawarra.
NRMA president Wendy Machin said it was no coincidence that the organisation’s strong corporate governance and financial turnaround coincided with Mr Tynan becoming deputy president.
“Michael is a giant of the NRMA and has been a beacon of leadership to the board,’’ she said.
Ms Machin said Mr Tynan’s appointment as deputy president to Alan Evans ‘‘represented the beginning of the end of the bad old days of NRMA board infighting and poor governance practices’’.
‘‘Today, the NRMA board leads the way in good governance,’’ she said.
Ms Machin said Mr Tynan was one of the most respected leaders in St George and Sutherland Shire because of the enormous contribution he had made to the local community including support for charities and groups.
His advocacy on behalf of motorists in the region would have a lasting impact.
“Make no mistake, without Michael Tynan, the ongoing push to make the F6 extension a reality would have died long ago,’’ she said.
Ms Machin said he also had fought for funding for roads such as the Princes Highway, Picton Road, the Illawarra Highway, and without him, ‘‘climbing lanes on the F6 at Mount Ousley would never had happened’’.
Mr Tynan said that although he was leaving the organisation, ‘‘I’ll be an NRMA man forever’’.
Ms Machin will replace Mr Tynan as deputy president after announcing her resignation from the top job.
Fellow director Kyle Loades will become president from July 1.
