UPDATE: A new road in Sydney’s south to be funded by the proposed electricity sell-off would not be the F6 extension as indicated initially.
Liberal MPs, briefed on the project, were told it was a ‘‘link road’’ that would extend only from Tempe to President Avenue, Kogarah.
‘‘That’s not satisfactory,’’ said Heathcote MP Lee Evans, who, with other MPs, had pushed for $20 million for full planning of the F6 to be included in the budget next week.
Mr Evans said the proposed new road would needed to be integrated into the F6 planning.
Details of the new road project were sketchy in material distributed to the media yesterday.
Premier Mike Baird said the government would direct the WestConnex Delivery Authority to bring forward a business case ‘‘to add two new WestConnex extensions’’.
They were south — linking towards Sutherland Shire and Illawarra and north — linking towards the Anzac Bridge and Victoria Road.
More in the Leader tomorrow.
Is this a case of one step forward, 10 steps back?
Wednesday, June 10: SouthConnex, an extension of the F6 motorway through St George and Sutherland Shire, would be among projects funded by a proposed sale of 49 per cent of the electricity ‘‘poles and wires’’ network.
Premier Mike Baird said the privatisation plan, for which the Coalition would seek a mandate at the election next March, would unlock $20 billion in infrastructure funding.
Mr Baird said the government would direct the WestConnex Delivery Authority to bring forward a business case to add two new extensions to the motorway that is designed to link and expand the M4 and M5 motorways.
He said one extension would be in the south, linking Sutherland Shire and Illawarra.
The other extension would be in the north, linking the new motorway with Anzac Bridge and Victoria Road.
Mr Baird said the ‘‘centrepiece’’ of the privatisation plan would be a rapid rail transit line including a second rail crossing of Sydney Harbour, which would extend the North West Rail Link through the CBD and beyond to Bankstown.
