THE winter sport season may not yet be over but summer sporting codes are already taking registrations.
Among those clubs eager to entice players is De La Salle (DLS) Seagulls Cricket Club.
Club secretary Adam Bird said registrations were open and registration days would be held at Woolooware Oval this Thursday, July 24, 5pm to 8pm, and Sunday, July 27, 10am to 1pm.
"As one of the smaller clubs in Sutherland Shire, we need to boost our numbers, especially in the under-8 and under-10 age groups, so that we continue to be a viable club," Mr Bird said.
"The modified cricket played in the younger age groups enables everyone to be involved in every game."
Mr Bird said he expected renewed interest from youngsters keen to take up cricket after Australia's recent successes in the Ashes series and one-day internationals.
DLS Seagulls started a cricket academy last year and this has expanded in 2014 to include 18 boys aged eight to 12.
They took part in the first of six sessions last Friday night, which was run by two level-three Cricket Australia-accredited coaches.
"This year, with financial assistance from Tradies Gymea and Caringbah, we have been able to increase the number of players participating in the academy," Mr Bird said.
"We expect to continue to increase the number each year so that we can encourage and develop more of the talented cricketers at our club.
"We hope that young players will want to come to DLS Seagulls to enjoy their cricket and be part of the academy in future years.
"[The academy] is excellent preparation for the season, which starts in September, and the skills and techniques they learn at the academy will benefit them and their teammates throughout the season."
Discounted fees are available as are online registrations.
