Shire no place for freeway
Re the article "Baird talks up road funding" (Leader, July 8),
Roads Minister Duncan Gay is right when he states a lot of things have changed since 1951.
In particular, the residential spread in St George and Sutherland Shire.
What was a bunch of fibro low-budget homes in the 1950s is now suburbs of multi-storey brick dwellings.
To destroy the ambience of these suburbs with a freeway through the heart of the shire would be nothing short of vandalism.
The alternative for a southern arterial road joining the F5 is a much saner alternative.
CARTS (Citizens Advocating Responsible Transport) fought to stop the destruction of their homes in Gymea and South Kirrawee in the 1990s when Carl Scully abandoned the idea of building the F6 through the heartland of the shire.
I hope Mr Gay wisely follows in his footsteps.
