The wave window is closing so get out there and make the most of today and Thursday's small but clean conditions. It’s been a good few days with a 3-4ft Easterly swell and good offshores leaving us with some nice waves on our beach.
The swellnet forecast doesn’t leave us with much hope with Saturday saying- FLAT! It's that simple really with Friday dropping to 1-2ft before heading into a weekend with no real chances to surf.
I took today's pics at both ends of the Wall, with a right and left at the south end and a right suck at the Dunny end-the rest of the beach looked a bit average.
After that it's crack out the longboards because nothing is on the charts for the next week - 2 footers if we are lucky.
Speaking of luck, the ASP tour lucked in as JBay was pumping. A thrilling Finals day at the J-Bay Open, stop No. 6 of 11 on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour saw Mick Fanning crowned event champion in epic conditions at Supertubes. The reigning three-time ASP World Champion faced fellow Australian Joel Parkinson in an historic and hard-fought Final in flawless conditions. Super Saturday at Jeffreys Bay saw the world’s best surfers take to the water in pumping six-to-ten foot surf and thousands of fans gathered to watch the final 12 surfers battle the waves and each other. Surfing legends Tom Curren (USA) and Mark Occhilupo (AUS) also took on the classic walls of J-Bay as part of the ASP Heritage Series and wasn’t that thrilling.
Mick Fanning (AUS) took his second WCT win of the season after defeating fellow Australian and childhood friend Joel Parkinson in the Final of the J-Bay Open. The victory is his third win at Jeffreys Bay (his previous wins were in 2006 and 2002) and moves Fanning to No. 3 in the ASP WCT rankings.
The best news was I picked Fanning in my surfpicks and have now rocketed up the list from second last to second behind Fish head….bring on the Billabong pro in “Chopes” August 15.
In shades of Flintoff-ASP Top 34 surfer, Jeremy Flores, has been suspended from competition until August 27, 2014, resulting from an incident which occurred following his Round 2 heat at the J-Bay Open in South Africa on July 12, 2014.
The incident involved the athlete confronting ASP officials and event staff in an unsportsmanlike manner and resulted in the Rules and Disciplinary Committee, after completing its investigation, fining the surfer US$6,000 and suspending him from ASP competitions until August 27, 2014. As a result, Flores is ineligible to compete in both the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach (an ASP Prime QS event) and the Billabong Pro Tahiti (an ASP WCT event).
It doesn’t normally work when you abuse the judges - funnily enough.
Four NSW School Champions were crowned yesterday at the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) NSW Junior State Titles at Bonny Hills.
Pristine three-to-four foot conditions provided competitors with the perfect blank canvas to show their skills as they attempted to cement their position in the NSW team for the upcoming Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Yallingup, Western Australia in December.
Chris Zaffis (Angourie) was able to snatch the Under-19 Boys win from Jared Hickel (Cronulla) and Zac Wightman (Skennars Head) in the dying seconds of the final heat of the day. Needing a solid score to steal the lead, Zaffis was able to lock in an 8.47 scoring ride to sneak past Hickel and Wightman and take the win.
Jared's second and Roan O'Sullivan's semi result means that De La Salle won the NSW u19 boys MR shield, which is a great result.
Holly Wawn (Newport) fought a tight battle with Under-16 Girls winner Macy Callaghan (Avoca) to take the win in the elder division. The talented natural-footer threw down a series of technical forehand turns to nab the win with a heat total of 12.83, Paris Whittaker made the final but finished 4th.Both Holly and Paris attend the Sydney distance education high school so they also won the MR shield.
Current ASP Qualifying Series surfer and Port Macquarie local Matt Banting is thrilled to see the upcoming NSW Junior State Surfing Titles taking place in his hometown from the July 21-27.
Banting - who is currently sitting in second place on the 2014 ASP Qualifying Series after claiming two elite events already this year - is a former competitor in the NSW Junior State Titles.
“I’m stoked to see the NSW Junior State Titles come to my hometown,” said Banting. “Surfing in the State Titles and events like that was such a memorable part of my upbringing. The State Titles paved the way for my career and taught me a lot about competing and developing a competitive strategy.”
