My, what big skulls you have: Misses 6 and 8 check out the skulls in the Meet the Family exhibition.
AS REGULAR visitors to the Australian Museum, The Hungry Family always gets excited when a new exhibition arrives.
When it is dino-themed, as the current Tyrannosaurus — Meet the Family exhibit is, we are itching to check it out.
We saw dino bones from China and the US and discovered that there is more to this beast than the infamous T-rex; the family tree included creatures that looked like scary giant chooks (the feathered dilong) and the long-necked guanlong, originating in China.
Naturally, the star of the show is a T-rex nicknamed Scotty, discovered in Canada.
One of his fave snacks was triceratops, and a film showing how T-rex used to hunt triceratops made Miss 6 very sad.
One of the clever aspects of the exhibit was the shadow of Scotty, which was projected onto a wall. Every minute or so the shadow moved and roared.
Lots of hands-on activities kept Misses 6 and 8 enthralled, including a machine designed to mimic the explosion which was thought to wipe out the dinos.
We checked out the reconfigured Long Gallery — the former home of skeletons now shares the space with a stuffed lion from Botswana, jars filled with all sorts of beasties, and old photos of how the gallery area once looked.
The exhibition is on until July 27; see http://australianmuseum.net.au/landing/tyrannosaurs/
