The headlines "Bird habitat in decline" and "Great concern" on the Leader front page (July 10) was probably some of the most important headlines I have ever seen any newspaper state.
More media need to give nature declines the high visibility you have. Your paper is to be commended and I hope for our children, grandchildren and future generations, more papers will do what you have done on a regular and consistent basis.
It would be great if your paper put a reporter on what is negatively happening worldwide and not just with birds but with fish and mammals, too.
The public in general are not hearing enough "whistle blowers" about the health of our planet and how they can help stop what is happening.
Protecting the shorelines and wetlands here and around the world is essentially crucial. Very few people understand . . . when the delicate balance of nature is pushed over the tipping point (whatever that threshold of tolerance is), then the oceans' temperature will change drastically, bringing with it drastic adjustments in the weather.
And that natural self-adjustment may just be more than we humans will be able to survive. Your "Bird habitat in decline" may just be like the "canaries in the mines," only out in the polluted air for all to see. Yes, urgent federal government action is necessary for this local, national and worldwide problem before it's too late.
Keep up the great reporting because it's the best way to bring this important issue to the attention of all, who in turn can bring to the attention of their elected officials to pass laws to end and prevent this detrimental problem to all.
