Two men, aged 19 and 21, are due to appear in Sutherland Local Court today after police found 389 cannabis plants in a hydroponic set-up at a South Hurstville house last night.
Strike Force Grassy detectives and St George police searched the Salisbury Street property about 9pm Thursday.
They seized the plants, which they said were higher than a metre tall, and worth about a million dollars, from the five-bedroom rental house.
Police allege the house was converted into ‘‘an elaborate hydroponic cannabis set-up’’.
They said when they entered the property, the men were cutting the stems off the plants.
Redfern detective chief inspector Stuart Bell said the plants ''were extremely mature''.
''The most mature I’ve seen, and at the stage of harvesting,’’ he said.
‘‘This was an extremely sophisticated growing system. Each room has been converted into a cannabis growing room.
‘‘All the windows were darkened, each room had filters...we don’t know how long it’s been there but we think it’s about three months.’’
Police charged the two men yesterday with cultivating a large commercial quantity of cannabis and other related offences.
Both men were refused bail to appear in court today.
Redfern Region Enforcement Squad set up Strike Force Grassy to investigate enhanced indoor cultivation of cannabis.
