CHILDREN from The Point Preschool, Oyster Bay, took their lessons outdoors last Friday for Schools Tree Day.
As part of National Tree Day on Sunday, about 70 pupils from the preschool and Como Public School joined forces with a Sutherland Shire Bushcare volunteer.
Despite rain, they planted more than 500 trees at Greenpoint Reserve.
This year was the third the preschool has participated in the popular environmental event, a Planet Ark initiative.
The preschool works with Sutherland Shire Council's Bushcare officer, Bradley Van Luyt, in monthly environmental projects.
"The children want to look after the land outside our gate in the hope more birds will fly in," preschool director Catherine Lee said.
"They want to make it a beautiful place."
Planet Ark's National Tree Day manager Debbie Agnew said the tree day was a "wonderful way for students to enjoy time outside and connect with nature".
"It engages students in a fun, hands-on activity which reinforces their environmental, maths, science and creative arts learning and helps brighten up their school grounds."
