They come in saffron, lilac, cream, golden, and red to name a few colours — and they are more than guinea pigs to their human fans.
Officially called cavies, they were the star attraction when people flocked to their Loftus show on Sunday August 3.
Organised by the NSW Cavy Club and the Australian National Cavy Council, the show promoted the hobby to Sydney’s southern suburbs.
‘‘There was a previous event about 20 years when it was held at Woronora,’’ said club spokesman Karl Kilpatrick.
‘‘The numbers who attended on the weekend was phenomenal.
‘‘There were about 90 entries with 30 members entering.’’
The best in show winner was a self-black entered by Lynn Russell and the reserve in show prize went to a texcel entered by Tracie McMillan.
Mr Kilpatrick said many people brought their cavies for advice and to determine their gender or whether they were pregnant.
