A LITTLE pocket of Athenian dining traditions is in Rocky Point Road, Ramsgate, where people dreaming of a Greek feast can find authentic food.
The owner of the Oily Tree, Paul Tzitzis, is from a family of Greek restaurateurs who are passionate about authenticity and tradition.
Mr Tzitzis owned Santorini Greek Taverna at the same site before selling up to work as a chef overseas.
But the desire to run his own eatery returned, so he opened the restaurant on the site of his former business.
A passionate chef, Mr Tzitzis wants to see people enjoying real food in a relaxed and happy setting.
Pan fried calamari, saganaki cheese, and pickled octopus are on the mezedes menu, while more substantial meals include lamb spit, moussaka, and kontosouvli (marinated pork neck from the rotisserie).
‘‘We take a lot of pride in what we do; we are trying to do as much in-house as possible, including breads, dips, olive oil and more,’’ he said.
For people wanting a meal on the go, there are affordable options: Athenian-style souvlaki wraps from $8.50 and kalamaki (individual skewers with wood-fired bread and lemon wedge) are $3.50 each.
