BATES Drive School celebrated its open day with a gift that will benefit children with moderate and severe intellectual and physical disabilities.
Education Minister Adrian Piccoli visited the school this month to open a modern make-over worth more than $4.4 million.
Demountable buildings have been replaced with five permanent classrooms, there is a new administration block, a special programs room, a covered outdoor learning area and improved access to all buildings.
Classrooms are airconditioned and have interactive whiteboards, and there are new bathroom and shared kitchen facilities.
Solar-heating has been installed in the hydrotherapy pool.
The finished project will complement strong enrolments which increased by more than 15 per cent since 2008.
Bates Drive was one of 19 schools for specific purposes upgraded by the state government using funding from the Building the Education Revolution program.
School principal Robyn Compton said the new additions were "magnificent".
"We are fortunate to have them," she said.
"They provide greater access for students to develop independent living skills, mobility and communication.
"When the students saw the new facilities, they were taken back.
"We have spent the past 18 months in very restricted play areas, so we had to teach the children how to play because they were not used to the amount of space. It was a teaching and learning experience."
