MATT Williams, of Penshurst, grew up playing rugby union and cricket.
Fast forward to now, age 45, and the former Sydney first grade rugby union, centre/winger, is now carving out the next phase of his sporting life — as an AFL Auskick co-ordinator.
In fact, Williams has been named the Auskick co-ordinator of the year in his rookie season of coaching.
Williams was called off the interchange bench to step into the role only this season at Penshurst RSL Panthers at Olds Park, Penshurst.
"I grew up playing rugby union and cricket," Williams said.
He played first grade union at Eastern Suburbs and grade cricket with Randwick. He said he had rarely watched AFL before.
"I got involved with the Auskick program here at Penshurst RSL Panthers, because of my son, Thomas," Williams said.
Auskick is for boys and girls aged five to 12, with the emphasis on the youngsters having fun and learning the skills of the game.
Williams took over from the previous Auskick co-ordinator, who had given many years service to the program.
The former top sportsman looked after the Auskick program every Sunday throughout the season.
He did coaching courses through the AFL to get the right accreditation.
"I will be back next year, I love it," Williams said.
He said the club officials, the children and parents had been "fantastic" supporting the Auskick program.
"I couldn't have done all this without their support," he said.
Penshurst RSL Panthers are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year.
