BEXLEY Public School has joined residential aged care provider Scalabrini Village, Bexley, for a community project that benefits two generations.
Children visit the home for their Sing Out Loud Together program, which aims to create valuable links between primary school pupils and elderly members of the community.
Across eight weeks, pupils sing with the elderly and both groups get the opportunity to interact and learn from each other.
A musician facilitates the course to ensure positive outcomes for the pupils and their "buddies".
The program uses the power of music to promote social engagement and stimulate cognitive functioning in healthy elderly people, and people who are suffering dementia.
Studies have shown that increased physical, cognitive, and social activity through inter-generational programs improves health for older people and educational learning in children.
