The MP for Cronulla and Sutherland Shire Council's mayor have a balanced approach on travel to Sutherland Hospital.
A new railway station to serve the hospital could cost up to $35 million, with a long walk on an elevated footpath. Stopping and restarting an eight-carriage train wears brakes and consumes electricity for a one-kilometre sector.
The station would incur maintenance costs and need lights all night.
Shuttle buses from Caringbah railway station for a one-kilometre, five-minute journey to the hospital central reception area makes [more] sense.
A service could start next week, followed by purpose-built buses with easy-access doors.
Sutherland Hospital could provide courtesy bus travel for staff near to their home, similar to club services. This would ease hospital parking demand.
