Brooke Anderson of Brighton-Le-Sands has become part of Australian sports history.
She was the co-captain of the Australian women’s rugby union seven team which won a gold medal, yesterday, Wednesday, at the World Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
Australia defeated Canada, 38-10.
It is the first time the Australian team has won gold in the sport contested in the Olympic movement.
Brooke, 18, had to overcome a serious knee injury in recent months to become fit for the Games.
Brooke’s father, Michael, said it was a ‘‘proud moment for the family’’.
‘‘Big ups to Canada, they were the hardest opponent and very physical,’’ Brooke said.
‘‘The team has its sights on competing at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
‘‘There is a lot of potential in this team.
‘‘I’m pretty sure if we all keep working really hard, we have a chance of getting to Rio.’’
