THE Bondi vet came to the shire last week in support of local pets.
Dr Chris Brown, star of Network Ten’s popular show Bondi Vet, helped out in a sausage sizzle outside the Menai IGA store on August 13 to raise funds for
the Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter.
He was helped by the animal shelter’s manager Jeremy Bennett and staff member Lisa Wray, and met two of the animal shelter’s current inhabitants, Riglet and Sunflower.
The television vet was mobbed by shoppers when he later took a stroll through the store.
Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter at Taren Point has also been in the spotlight this year, winning the Local Government Managers Australia NSW Management Excellence Award in the Partnerships category.
The award recognises cross-council collaboration.
The shelter is operated by the council in partnership with City of Sydney Council.
Since the partnership started, the shelter has reduced the destruction of animals to 4 per cent — the lowest rate among NSW councils operating a shelter.
Last year 960 cats and dogs were rehoused through the efforts of the shelter’s staff.
The animals are cared for by a dedicated team of more than 55 community volunteers.
