AN OPEN-AIR cinema, more outdoor dining areas, a performing arts centre and a cultural and tourist centre.
These are just some of the suggestions made by professional town planners who entered the Cronulla Design Ideas Competition.
Gardens, sunken lawns, an "urban forest", giant sculptures and fountains, covered walkways, more children's playgrounds, including water play areas, and even a footbridge linking Cronulla centre and the beach were suggested.
Residents have until September 10 to choose their preferred design for a revamped Cronulla Plaza, Peryman Square and the retail district.
Sutherland Shire mayor Steve Simpson launched the council-run competition in June.
There are three categories: professional, student and community.
Entries are on display in the Cronulla Central building and on the council's website, so the community can give feedback about the plans.
"I am sure the community is just as interested as I am in seeing what ideas people have come up with to transform these key recreational, tourism and business places into well-considered public and commercial spaces, which reflect the future aspirations for Cronulla and the shire," Cr Simpson said.
"No doubt the exhibition will generate more debate and discussion on how we can revitalise the Cronulla centre.
"All comments received from the exhibition, the Cronulla Plaza information stall run during the July school holidays and social media feedback will be used to brief the judges with regard to the views of the community."
An independent judging panel including leading Australian landscape architects, urban designers and architects will select the winners, which will be announced during the Cronulla Spring Festival on September 13.
Top ideas will be exhibited for two weeks at Cronulla Central and on the council website to choose the winner of the People's Choice Award.
"We are really excited about this competition as the ideas generated will form part of our long-term planning process for the future of the area. It will help us build a picture of how people want to use this area and what they want it to become," Cr Simpson said.
