On Saturday August 23, while walking our dogs at Oatley Point Reserve, my husband slipped and landed heavily hitting his head and body very strongly against a rock.
When he got up he suddenly became dizzy, then lost consciousness and fell backwards, hitting his head quite badly against a rock for a second time.
We were in a very difficult situation because we didn’t have a phone with us, I don’t drive and one of our dogs is extremely protective of his pack. However, some wonderful people came to our rescue and we’d like to thank them all through this letter, hoping this message will reach them.
We’d like to thank a group of builders who were working in an Algernon Street property, who responded to my desperate screams for help. They called the ambulance service, and then accompanied me to the scene of the accident where my husband was unconscious. They stayed watching my husband while I walked to secure our dogs inside our van and they stayed there until the police and NSW Fire Service arrived, though they had already finished work for the day.
We’d like to thank the people across Oatley Bay. who by chance saw the accident with their binoculars and realised the gravity of the situation and called for help, as I later learned from the Fire Brigade.
Whoever you are, you’re an asset to our wonderful community.
We’d like to thank the police, fire and emergency services, all of whom worked hard for quite a while to stabilise my husband at the scene.
A special thanks goes to the two fire service men who took charge of our van and drove me, and our two dogs home, parked our vehicle in our driveway, waited for me to settle the animals and collect some clothing for my husband, who had been taken to St George Hospital, and then drove me to the Emergency Unit of the hospital to be with him.
Last but not least, a special thanks goes from us to all the doctors, physiotherapists, and nurses at St George Hospital Emergency Unit and Ward 3 South, who cared for Martin, and constantly reassured me that he was in good hands and would eventually recover. We have nothing but admiration and gratitude for all these people.
