Swimming NSW and Water Polo Australia have thrown their support behind the proposed Rockdale Aquatic Centre.
A progress report on the centre, formerly Bexley Pool, was presented at the council meeting on Tuesday night before a tender report was presented to councillors in closed session.
A decision on the tender is expected later this month.
Swimming NSW CEO Mark Heathcote was one of four speakers to lend their support to the proposed plans at the meeting.
‘‘There’s no doubt in my mind that the new centre will be a premier facility,’’ he said.
‘‘Sydney has been crying out for a centre like this for a long time which is why we will support it as much as we can to make sure it is a resounding success.’’
Water Polo Australia CEO Chris Harrison said the centre could act as high performance hub for water polo in southern Sydney.
‘‘Thousands of school students play water polo every week and pools like this give them the pathway to make it a career,’’ he said.
One of the students set to benefit from the new centre is Sydney Technical High School student Chris Glitsos who spoke of the benefits for young people.
‘‘I am thrilled with the new centre; it will truly cater for the whole community,’’ he said.
‘‘The benefits for health and well-being are enormous, not just for students but for everyone.’’
