If anyone needed a win this week it was Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter - and his team delivered.
Potter, whose future will be determined on Sunday when the new Wests Tigers board meets for the first time, used perhaps his final half-time speech to spark a second half revival that saw the joint venture snap a six game losing streak defeating Cronulla 26-10 in front of 5112 diehard fans at Leichhardt Oval.
"Control the footy and tighten our passes up," Potter said when asked what he told his team at half time.
"I thought we were playing too lateral and wide but I thought defensively we were quite good.
"I think our team showed what they can do when we control the footy a bit better."
When asked after the game about his coaching future Potter said he will let the process take its course.
He instead focused on praising the effort of his team who piled on 22 unanswered points in the second half to notch their 10th win of the year.
As expected, with both teams out of contention the games didn't reach any great heights.
In fact the game tended to mirror the weather conditions; dark and cloudy with the odd ray of sunshine. Even a rainbow.
One of those rays was Black Austin, who shifted to fullback with the late inclusion of Luke Brooks, who broke the game open with an 80-metre kick return to give the home team their second and what turned out to be final lead of the game.
Unfortunately Austin was forced to leave the field with an ankle injury shortly after which in a way summed up their season perfectly.
Sporting the socks of their junior league clubs, the Tigers peeled off three tries in 11 minutes after half time to turn the tide in their favour after evergreen five eighth Daniel Holdsworth supplied the final plays for two Valentine Holmes tries to give the Sharks an unlikely lead.
Enter half time and Potter's calming words which led to a more direct second half which yielded two tries to Bodene Thompson, Curtis Sironen and Austin's clutch four-pointer.
Skipper Robbie Farah said it was a bittersweet win.
"It was a disappointing year; we can't sugarcoat that," Farah said.
"We set out to make the top eight as every other team does and we haven't done that so we've got to consider the season a failure."
Whether Potter gets a chance to make up for another Tigers final-less year remains to be seen.
What is certain is when the Sharks fumbled the ball on the last play of the game it was in essence a win for both teams; it meant a tumultuous 2014 season was over.
A full stop to a season that had both teams dodging drama seemingly at every corner.
ASADA suspensions, coaching dilemmas, injuries and retirements cruelled any chance of either team making any serious finals run.
The Sharks couldn't escape the drama or the wooden spoon in 2014 claiming their first since 1969. Ironically it was the Balmain Tigers who won the premiership that year. For the visitors, Michael Gordon continued his strong recent form and was their best on the park.
Sharks interim coach James Shepard said the home team handled the wet conditions better, lamenting his side's 20 errors
"They got that momentum early in the second half and never let it go… they ran a bit harder and a bit straighter," he said.
The silver lining for both clubs is the amount of new talent the club has unearthed. In total there were nine players on the park who had made their NRL debuts this year.
There was another debutant in action on Saturday as Belinda Sleeman became the first female to officiate as a touch judge in an NRL game.
