St George Illawarra Dragons ran out of ‘‘puff’’ on Sunday when thrashed 40-10 by Newcastle Knights at Hunter Sports Stadium.
The Dragons were never in the hunt and it was apparent early in the game they were off the pace.
Newcastle played the ball faster, ran harder and were precise with their attack.
It was a disappointing end to the season for the Dragons, finishing 11th on 26 points.
Coach Paul McGregor said he sensed before the kick-off that the team was not in the right frame of mind.
He noticed that after 10 minutes into the game, his team was lacking intensity.
McGregor said the Dragons had no excuses.
“You want to go out there with a thought process that you are going to give your best effort because you have not got next week to play for,” he said.
“The story was told after the first 10 minutes. It was a long 80 minutes for me.”
