CRONULLA RSL Club hosted its annual Retired Police Day last Thursday to acknowledge former police who have served with honour and distinction.
It was a chance for old friends to catch up and an opportunity for retired officers to mingle with a new generation of recruits and young constables making their mark in the force.
Former assistant commissioner Geoff Schuberg was one of the dozens of retired police who took part and said it was a great opportunity to catch up with friends he hadn't seen in decades.
The 67-year-old Cronulla resident started his career with Sutherland police in 1965 before working in the organised crime division.
He pointed to the arrest of former detective Murray Riley, who was caught with more than two tonnes of cannabis, as a career highlight.
He retired after 34 years but still enjoys meeting up with old friends from the force.
"It's great to see so many friends here, especially out of uniform," he said.
Geoff Woodgate, 68, of Woolooware started in the police force in 1966 and worked as the local rescue commander over eight years in the 1980s.
In this role he was responsible for responding to motor vehicle accidents, fires and drownings.
He witnessed some terrible incidents over his 39 years and said he was now happily retired.
"I haven't seen some of these guys for years," he said.
"Some of them I worked with as a young man in the '70s and '80s so it's great."
