PORT Hacking Outrigger Canoe Club is headed to Hawaii for the 62nd Island Molokai Hoe on Sunday, October 12.
It's the global marathon event of canoe racing, the ultimate test of entrants' minds, bodies and souls.
International teams head to Hawaii for what is considered to be the pinnacle in world canoe competition racing.
Crew member Peter Williams said the nine-man crew had been training hard for the event. Darook Park, North Cronulla, is the team's training base.
Williams said the number of the event might be a "good omen" for the team.
"Quite a few of the crew were born in 1962," he said.
Hoe is the Hawaiian word for paddling; the 75-kilometre race will be from Molokai to Waikiki Beach.
"It will take our team about 5½ hours to complete; the main thing is that we finish," he said.
The nine-man crew is Dennis Carrett of Cronulla, Peter Williams of Caringbah, Angelo Memmolo of Sylvania, Fabrice Grandou of Cronulla, Geoff Hunt of Como, Marty Lochrin of Caringbah, Graham Smith, of Cronulla, David Money of Cronulla and Phil McDonald of Roseberry.
The self-funded crew has been in training for 18 months.
