ROCK'N'ROLL in the classroom?
It might seem odd to some but the method is having positive results at St Declan's Primary School, Penshurst.
The school's kindergarten teacher Dan Colquhoun,of Kogarah, is using music to keep kids focused and engaged.
He has called his plan "'Rocking Dan Teaching Man", and the aim is to get children to sing along to a song he has written.
The teacher uses a computer program that enables users to record tracks to animate the pictures in the songs.
The method also encourages children to get involved in writing lyrics.
Mr Colquhoun said the activity helped pupils boost their memory.
"Most of us remember things we were taught when we use song," he said.
"If students sing, dance or clap along in between lessons, it helps them to get into routine, develop interactive skills, sequencing, hand-eye co-ordination, better oral language and academic outcomes and reduces restlessness and encourages them to stay calm.
"It acts as a motivator and quietens the mind."
The teacher's animated songs received international acclaim after he won a scholarship from the Australian Catholic University.
