Menai MP Melanie Gibbons joined Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston at State Parliament House today to launch the 18th annual White Balloon Day as part of National Child Protection Week.
Ms Gibbons was among other MPs at Parliament House which was adorned with white balloons.
Ms Johnston said White Ribbon Day on Friday September 12 was an important initiative to raise awareness of child sexual assault.
‘‘Child sexual assault for the most part is preventable. We can put a stop to it. Let’s do this as a nation and together we can make Australia the safest place to raise a child by 2020,’’ she said.
The state government joins a long list of corporations, celebrities, schools and individuals supporting the event which aims to put an end to child sexual assault and protect the 1 in 5 children who will be assaulted sexually before their 18th birthday.
