A ST GEORGE butcher and two from Sutherland Shire are in the running for being declared the best in the state for their sausages and burgers.
The awards that the three received were the result of the most recent round of heats in the Australian Meat Industry Council NSW/ACT Sausage King and Best Butchers Burger competition.
Bresnahan's Butchers and Fine Foods Mortdale won the most prizes, with two firsts: one in poultry and the other for "best butcher's burger" with its premium Angus beef burger.
The other places were four second places, three third places and an equal third.
Stapleton Family Meats at Gymea scored five first places and two second placements.
Bangor Gourmet Meats of Bangor got a second place, a third and an equal-third.
The wins were the results of the Padstow heats in the competition for southern Sydney's local independent butchers.
State winners will proceed to the national finals on Saturday, February 7 next year
They will be in contention for the titles of Sausage King and Burger King.
Peter Bresnahan said it was attention to detail that distinguished his business.
"I'm proud of my team. We use premium ingredients; our processes are second to none," he said.
Mark Stapleton said his business prided itself on its sausage-making, its smallgoods, hams and bacon.
"We're pretty happy to have won an award and we are now up against the state finalists," he said.
