BILL Harris, 98, of Allawah has many feats under his belt: first grade rugby league player, international acrobat and rugby union star.
But it is his title as the oldest former detective in the state that he counts as one of his greatest honours.
Mr Harris was one of a number of retired police officers to take part in Retired Police Day last Friday at Club Central, Hurstville.
It was a chance for old friends to catch up and for retired officers to mingle with a new generation of recruits and young constables making their mark in "the force".
Mr Harris joined the police as a 22-year-old starting in the Drug Squad at Redfern before moving to the No.7 Division covering southern Sydney.
He was involved in several high-profile cases in his 32 years, including bringing the first person to trial for marijuana possession in NSW.
He continues to contribute, even after his retirement in 1970, working with NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione to introduce Retired Police Day.
"It is important that we have a day like this," he said.
"I really miss the camaraderie of the detectives."
As for being the oldest NSW ex-detective?
"It is a bit of an honour," he said.
