It's all looking UP for this week’s surf report, with the Swellnet chart showing good things for the days to come.
This morning the beach was a nice site 3-4ft of south swell with a 10-15 knot sou-wester blowing up the faces. The only problem and it is a problem is that there are only one or two banks on the beach.
That these banks are right in the middle of Wanda, compounds the problem. If all things are equal and the swell does pick up to a peak on Saturday the waves should be spread a bit more evenly along the beach.
I took today's pics at Fwits where it was a circus, complete with animals like the Termite and the Fishkiller. Steve Cope was out there too so maybe he had a contract to kill some of the pests.
Lucky for us we can look forward to a ton of festival activities as part of the NRMA Women's Surf Classic and Maxum ASP Women's Pro Junior which is on this weekend.
The two-day event, which runs from the September 20-21, is set to encompass a wide variety of stalls from local businesses and nationally recognised brands.
“We’re looking to build a village atmosphere for the local Cronulla community,” said Surfing NSW Event Manager Luke Madden. “It'll be great to see a range of different brands, businesses and community groups come together to form a celebration of women in surfing.”
Boost Mobile is excited to take part in the Cronulla action and is backing the future of Australian grassroots surfing by joining Surfing Australia in the country’s biggest Boardriders event in January as well.
Tradies will host a Women In Surf Sports Dinner on the eve of the event at Elouera Surf Club. The dinner will feature an array of guest speakers and will also serve as the launch of the official ASP Australasia Pro Junior Qualifying Series event.
In a good move Maxum will donate $5.00 from every watch sale to Bravehearts to help their mission of protecting Australian children from sexual assault.
In the States today, my man, West Australian and reigning Hurley Pro Trestles event champion Taj Burrow won through Round 2 with a solid hit out against Californian Brett Simpson. Burrow will now match-up against fellow Aussie Kai Otton in Round 3 of competition. The Hurley Pro Pro Trestles, stop No. 8 of 11 on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour, was called ON today for Round 2 and half of Round 3 today.
The surf was pumping where they got through round 2 and 4 heats into round 3 before time beat them out- the forecast is for good waves to come so stay tuned. In the woman’s, Stephanie Gilmore proved that the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s World Title race is far from over with a blazing performance in the first ever women’s WCT event at Lower Trestles. The Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles, stop no. 7 of 10 for the 2014 season, got underway in exceptional 3 to 5 foot waves and ran through Rounds 1, 2 and 3.
In more good local news, the first Subway Summer Surf Series is done and dusted, with four new champions being crowned in the Under-16 and Under-18 Boys and Girls divisions.
Competitors in the aforementioned divisions battled it out in clean one-foot peaks at North Curl Curl, in an attempt to claim the maiden title and take the top spot on the dais.
Jared Hickel used his razor sharp backhand whacks to take out the win in the Under-18 Boys. Hickel’s efforts in the final left his closest rival, Kai Warner (Narrabeen, NSW) chasing a 9.67 wave score to take the lead. Despite locking in a series of respectable scores, Warner had to settle for second position, while local surfer Harley Ross-Webster (North Curl Curl, NSW) claimed third and Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) claimed fourth. Ironically, Hickel is currently employed by Subway in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.
“It was nice to get a few waves in a pretty slow lineup,” said Hickel. “I knew I’d have to wait for a decent waves and I managed to find a few. I’ve been trying to compete as much as possible lately and thankfully I’ve got a few decent results this year. I definitely want to take this award into work and ask for a raise now (laughs).”
As winners of the Under-18 division, both Wawn and Hickel have won an invite to attend a three-day Subway Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina.
This weekend, Jan Juc will hold the opening round of the internationally acclaimed Rip Curl GromSearch series seeing the best Under 16 surfers in the country converge on the popular beach break. Since its inception as a one day event in Victoria in 1999, the GromSearch series has developed into the strongest international series of events for 16 year and under surfers around the world. With parallel Rip Curl GromSearch series in over 10 countries, it has become a crucial stepping stone in the development of junior surfers.
Cronulla juniors gets event No 2- on October 10-12 before the National finals in January next year at North Narra.
Southside Malibu Club have run the 2014 Spring Classic, the waves were average but they got through the event at Wanda I would tell you the results but on their web page it says-“Hang on the results will be up soon !” So no results.
Speaking of results; Australian beaches are preparing for a new onslaught of frothing grommets with VEGEMITE SurfGroms launching into its fourth year. SurfGroms offers kids from 5-12 years old an opportunity to learn to surf while developing strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills at a very influential period in their lives, that they will enjoy and embrace for a lifetime.
Since its launch in October 2011, more than 30,000 Australian children have experienced the thrill of surfing for the first time - 30,000-oh my god- there won’t be a dry patch to stand on the beach!
There is so much surf action going on that I won’t bore you with any more, so plan your time over the next few days, stop reading about it and go surfing before all these kids take over!
