FOR at least two of the congregation the glue that binds them to the 90-year-old South Cronulla Uniting Church is its sense of community.
"I've been gong to the church since probably the early '70s," Monty Silver said. "I was a Methodist before."
The former scientist who is now the church's assistant treasurer said the church had been Congregational originally.
"The church is very friendly," he said. "it's like a happy family.
For Joy Kerslake, her association with the church is one that goes back about 45 years.
It was her children who led her to joining the church.
"I thought if the children were attending Sunday school I should go to church too," Mrs Kerslake said.
Her enthusiasm has also seen her take a special interest in the Bible and Bible study.
"It's good to be able to speak freely about the Bible," Mrs Kerslake said.
"If anyone new turns up at the church we try and make them feel comfortable."
Birthday celebrations marking 90 years will be at 9.30am on Sunday, October 5, at the South Cronulla Uniting Church, 124 Wilshire Avenue, South Cronulla.
There will be a service followed by a buffet-style morning tea, light refreshments, tea and coffee.
