Remember Johnny O’Keefe?
Although the Australian rock legend died in 1978, his music lives on — through his recordings and through daughter Vicky.
Vicky O’Keefe and her Tribute to Johnny O’Keefe show will be at Club Central Hurstville on Saturday, September 20.
‘‘The highlight will be singing the duet with my Dad on the big screen,’’ O’Keefe said.
‘‘There will be a 13-minute montage of archival footage from the stadium, Sing Sing Sing and the Johnny O’Keefe Show.
O’Keefe said the tribute to her father had been so successful that she was re-releasing the tribute album to mark his 80th birthday anniversary next January.
A new solo album — 50 Diamonds — with a collection of rock blues original songs will be released later this year.
‘‘I love performing my Dad’s songs for people as it brings them so many memories and I love hearing all the stories of the old days as I was only young when I lost my Dad,’’ O’Keefe said.
O’Keefe started playing the piano when she was five and picked up a guitar shortly after.
Her mother played the piano and both parents encouraged music in the family.
Coming from such a musical background, it was a natural progression to sing and write songs and have regular live performances at school concerts.
After losing her dad at 17, O’Keefe threw herself into her music.
She became a prolific songwriter and performer with her band VOKROK and toured the east coast of Australia in the early 1980s when the pub scene was booming.
Her first international support tour was with the legendary Rick Nelson (Garden Party) followed by Suzie Quatro and America.
She opened for Aussie rockers Midnight Oil, Goanna and Dragon ... just to name a few.
These performances led to regular TV appearances on high rating music and variety shows.
The show starts at 8.30pm at Club Central’s Biddegal Rooms.
Cost: members $4.40; non-members $5.50.
