On Sunday, September 21, Oatley will be among many towns and cities in a global rally calling for action on climate change.
Organised by a group of Oatley families in conjunction with St George Greens, the rally will include a 1pm picnic at Oatley Memorial Gardens.
Oatley Greens candidate Philippa Clark said the event coincided with the United Nations climate talks on September 23.
At least 120 heads of state will be at the UN but not Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
‘‘As world leaders touch down in New York City for the UN emergency climate talks on Monday, there will be one notable absence — Tony Abbott,’’ Ms Clark said.
‘‘His likely no-show at the UN talks is a sign of how little he cares about climate change and the effect it will have on future generations.
‘‘The international community will be watching with interest to see who is not there.’’
Ms Clark said many residents were expected to be at the rally.
‘‘There are many people at Oatley who are concerned about climate change and the impacts it will have on the livelihoods and prospects of our children and grandchildren,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s time to let the big polluters know we won’t let them dictate our future.
‘‘I encourage everyone to come together on Sunday to celebrate our environment here at Oatley.
‘‘Bring the children and a picnic lunch for a fun afternoon and to show your support.’’
Should Prime Minister Tony Abbott make more effort to deal with climate change?
