Seventeen students from Port Hacking High School can now call themselves Rural Fire Service firefighters after graduating from the secondary schools cadet program.
Students learn practical firefighting skills including fire awareness, leadership, fire science, personal development and workplace accident prevention.
NSW RFS director of membership and strategic services, Bronwyn Jones, congratulated the cadets who graduated on Thursday.
‘‘The 10-week program is going from strength to strength at Port Hacking High School; this is the second year students have taken part,’’ she said.
‘‘They learnt valuable lessons about fire safety and developed leadership and teamwork skills.
“They are a credit to their school and the community and I congratulate them on their successful completion.”
