If the Liberal Party knows who could become the next Sutherland Shire mayor, it’s staying tight-lipped about it.
The new mayor is due to be decided next Tuesday, September 23 at a special council meeting.
Sutherland Shire Council has 15 councillors and 11 of those are Liberals, so it’s a fairly safe bet the new mayor and deputy mayor could come from the party ranks.
Incumbent mayor Cr Steve Simpson said he would not stand for the top job.
Cr Simpson, a shire resident for 25 years, was elected to the council in 1995 and became mayor in 2013, taking over from Cr Kent Johns.
As of Friday afternoon, possible contenders said they were waiting for a meeting to decide whom they would nominate for the position.
Cr Kent Johns said ''it's up to the team to decide''.
The Leader is seeking comment from other councillors.
It has been a busy and controversial time for the council over the last year, with wide-ranging debate on its proposed draft LEP.
Do you think the mayor should have that role for more than 12 months? Who would you like to see as mayor for the next year?
